The five items I use for a beautifully finished fast face

These are the items won't leave home without

A few years ago, I flew into D.C. to give a talk. I used to fly in for events and fly out but I’ve learned to take the time to get there the night before when possible or early in the morning for an evening talk just to relax. There is nothing like running from the airport to an event. It left me frazzled and not at my best when I hit the stage or had to host an event.

I can do a pretty good every day face but I don’t like to do my own makeup when bright lights are involved. Normally, I can reach out to a friend in the city I am traveling to to get a referral for a makeup artist but this time she wasn’t available so I went the social media route.

I found an artist who had some beautiful examples of her work. We scheduled for 7am because I was the morning conference speaker. You guessed 7:30 she had called to cancel. Uggg! I can’t remember why, and while she did refund my money, I was stuck without a makeup artist in front of an expected audience of 200.

I made a rookie mistake and hadn’t packed all of my makeup - I had a makeup artist after all - so I had to make an early morning run to the local pharmacy. Thankfully they were opened. I put together a decent look but vowed never to leave without the basics again. It’s like putting on a great outfit and not wearing any accessories. A full face for me makes me feel like I am fully showing up for my audience and for myself.

As you grow there will always be things that you don't know...that's how you grow.

The incident just reminded me about all the details you have to think about as an entrepreneur and that even when you try to plan, there will be things that pop up - even something as small as a makeup artist no show - that you will have to figure out. It’s ok to fall forward and learn and grow.

I also learned to never leave home with the things below in my makeup bag:

1.Maybelline Tinted Moisturizer. This is a newly added must have and I don’t know how I have lived without it. It’s a super light tinted moisturizer. Perfect to give you a little glow for everyday.

2. It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara. My mother put me on to this mascara and it is amazing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked if my lashes were real - they are that good. And they look last until you take it off.

3. Hourglass Lipstick (Secretly -Classic Red is my fav). It’s a little pricey but the depth of the color and finish is so beautiful and the slick case is refillable. That and a little mascara and I can conquer the world.

4. Boy brow. My eyebrows have thinned from being overly plucked when I was younger. FIY- at some point your brows don’t grow back. This wonder tool thickens and shapes brows all in a few swipes.

5. Nude Nail Collection by Mented. This collection is like a classic mani in a bottle. And with three fresh, classic colors you can never go wrong.

What’s the one makeup item that you won’t leave home without? {P.S. I had to add this photo in celebration of natural afro day featuring the lovely Tracee Ellis Ross.}
