As a mother of a teen, I've felt the need to change my look. The season's cropped top helped me get back to me.
With the rise in COVID-19 cases here in South Florida, those summer getaways we had planned have turned to some small family pool parties and cocktails in lawn chairs in driveways. We decided to ditch our yoga pants and dress up for our little three person meet up. I had seen these two piece, mid-riff baring sets all over and couldn't wait to give them a try. I also loved that the whole outfit was reminiscent of the Dolce & Gabbana’s signature look.
I opened my closet and found the floral skirt right away. It was as pretty and feminine as I remembered and I couldn't wait to put it on. But I searched all over my closet and I couldn't find the top. Then it hit me - SHE had it! And by she, I meant my daughter. I went into her room and there it was hanging in her closet.
I paused for a minute...if my daughter was wearing this should I be?

It's been fun watching my daughter, who becomes a teen this month, fall in love with fashion like her mama. But that has also made me think more about my own fashion choices. I would never want her or my son to be embarrassed by something I've worn. You've seen those moms right? The ones that wear stilletos at the basketball games or super short shorts to the baseball field. So I was left struggling with my desire to look sexy and have fun with fashion with being a good role model for my kids.
You'll be surprised to learn that looking sexy won! Because what I want most is to teach my kids to be self-confident and be proud of the person that stares back at them in the mirror. I want them to know that God has a plan for their lives and that their road might look different from everyone else's and to chose what makes them happy.
So if fashion over 50 for you includes midriff baring tops, go for it! Don’t let your age, or height, or weight define you. Wear what you love – pieces that make you feel vibrant, beautiful and sexy. YOU! You’ve earned the right to define beauty for yourself.
